Governance Structure

How PST is governed and managed

PST's governance structure ensures accountability, transparency, and democratic representation. The Annual General Meeting serves as the supreme governing body, with authority delegated through a clear hierarchy.

Annual General Meeting (AGM)

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) is the supreme governing body of PST. It convenes once a year and brings together members from all zones to deliberate on the Society's affairs. Key functions of the AGM include:

  • Electing national leadership including the President and NEC members
  • Approving the annual budget and financial reports
  • Amending the Constitution and by-laws
  • Setting strategic direction and priorities
  • Receiving and adopting committee reports
  • Addressing motions raised by members

Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees serves as the custodian of PST's assets and ensures that the Society operates in accordance with its Constitution. Trustees provide independent oversight and guidance to the NEC. Their responsibilities include:

  • Safeguarding PST's property and assets
  • Ensuring constitutional compliance in all Society operations
  • Mediating disputes and providing advisory opinions
  • Overseeing the integrity of elections and governance processes

National Executive Committee (NEC)

The National Executive Committee (NEC) is responsible for the day-to-day management and administration of PST. Led by the President, the NEC implements resolutions passed at the AGM and coordinates all activities of the Society.

NEC composition includes:

  • President
  • Vice President
  • Secretary General
  • Treasurer
  • Zone Chairpersons (7 zones)
  • Committee Chairpersons

Standing Committees

Standing committees are established by the NEC to handle specialized functions. Each committee has defined terms of reference and reports to the NEC. Current standing committees include:

  • Membership Committee
  • Planning and Finance Committee
  • Ethics Committee (ECA)
  • ERP Committee
  • ITS Committee
  • Awards Committee

Zone Councils

Each of the 7 zones has its own Zone Council that manages local affairs, organizes zone-level events, and represents members' interests at the national level. Zone Councils are led by elected Zone Chairpersons who serve on the NEC.

Zone Councils play a vital role in bringing PST services closer to members and ensuring that the voices of pharmacists in all parts of Tanzania are heard in national decision-making processes.
